Anglican Bishop for Military Speaks at Veterans Day Event,
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – November 10, 2017
As reported by Archdeacon Woody Norman
On the 242nd anniversary of the establishment of the United States Marines Corps, Bishop Derek L.S. Jones was the featured speaker at a Veterans Day Event.
Bishop of the Jurisdiction of Armed Forces and Chaplaincy, The Rt. Rev. Derek LS Jones, was tagged as the guest speaker for the Veterans Day Celebration Event at St. Vincent’s Hospital – East in Birmingham, AL. The celebration was attended by service men and women from all branches of the military.
St. Vincent’s Hospital-East, in Birmingham, Alabama, was the venue for the celebration. In his presentation Bishop talked about love of God and love of country. He told his audience that his grandfather and his father served in the military and that he is a 28-year veteran of the United States Air Force. Jones was a fighter pilot. Jones also spoke about the changing political and social climate in the United States and its descent into an un-godly environment. The past two generations have become more and more secular and less likely to hold any belief in God. “We live in a different world today.” In his talk the bishop said that he served not as a privileged man, not as a white man, but as an American. The estimated crowd of 150 Veterans and observers then applauded loudly.
Bishop Jones thanked the Veterans for their dedicated service to America. After the ceremony, which included a re-enactment of the flag-raising event at Iwo Jima, the Veterans attending, their friends and family members, and the bishop shared lunch. Also on hand to represent the chaplaincy and provide materials and information on what we do was Mrs. Grace Wiley Ministry and Mission Development Director.
The event was planned and directed by hospital’s senior chaplain, the Reverend Barry Bruce, a priest in the Special Jurisdiction of the Armed Forces and Chaplaincy of the Anglican Church in North America.
