The Right Reverend Julian Dobbs, Missionary Bishop of CANA and Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of CANA East is running in the 41st Annual Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday (Oct 30).  Bishop Dobbs is running this marathon in honor of Anglican Chaplains – and in particular, our military chaplains.

“With so many of our Anglican Chaplains serving the US Armed Forces and Veteran’s Administration, I felt this was a tangible way that I could display my gratitude, support, and respect for all that they do,” said  Bishop Dobbs. “They truly are heroes for the faith, for our Church, and for our nation!”

Bishop Dobbs will be wearing the Anglican Chaplains heraldry on his runner  “pinny” as he winds he way 26.2 miles in and around Washington DC.  The Marine Corps Marathon traditionally finishes with a difficult up-hill climbing path to the finish line located by the famous Iwo Jima Memorial.  Crossing the finish line, competitors are greeted with a medal, food, and care.

“Both my brother and my sister have run the Marine Corps (marathon) and I know it is a favorite among marathon runners,“ commented The Right Reverend Derek Jones, Bishop of the Jurisdiction of the Armed Forces and Chaplaincy Jones.  More than 4000 people will be part of this years run. Bishop Jones continued, “Bp Dobbs is a ardent supporter of all chaplains in the Church and I became emotional when he told me his intentions – I pray for a successful and safe run for my brother.”

Bishop Jones was a bit emotional when Bishop Dobbs told him of his intent.  Canon Tim Trombitas, Bishop Jones’ chaplain, explained, “This is also a particular blessing to Bishop Derek Jones who has deep family connections to the USMC.  Bishop Jones’ father, William D. Jones, was the first ever Soloist and Moderator for the renown USMC Band – the ‘President’s Own’ – and Bishop Jones’ cousin is Lt Gen William Fitch – a celebrated Marine aviator who died this past year. Bishop Jones officiated the funeral of General Fitch at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA.”
