In just five more days the official commissioning of the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier the Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) will take place. Named after the 38th President of the United States, it is the lead ship of its class in the Navy’s super-carriers and pioneer of new technologies such as electromagnetic catapults and arresting gear, and two next generation nuclear reactors. Oh and by the way, as a bonus… it came with a baptism!

Congratulations to JAFC chaplain, The Reverend Jamal Scarlett currently serving aboard ship who gets our salute for performing the carrier’s 1st baptism in the Anglican Tradition. “I’m excited about the way ahead!’ said Chaplain Scarlett. “My purpose is to serve God, serve country and serve the serve men and women I have been given the honor to pastor.”

Several months ago before he was given this assignment, I asked Fr. Jamal where he would like to be stationed. He replied, “If I had the choice, I’d like to serve on the USS Gerald Ford (out of NAS Norfolk) as I know it’s set to commission here in the next few months. That’d be AMAZING!”

I think somebody upstairs heard that Jamal!
